Please join us in congratulating Deborah Grant on being SHLC’s June 2022 Learner of the Month.

Deborah was nominated by her mentor, Sharon. Here is an excerpt of what Sharon submitted to us about Deborah.

I am honoured to nominate Deborah Grant for the learner of the month for June.

Deborah has been a GLA Learner since June 2, 2020! She was originally Michelle’s learner. I can’t praise Deborah enough for her work ethic, her communication skills, and her overall enthusiasm for life and learning. She has so many talents and skills that she is inspiring. For example, her quilting, baking, and gardening.

Here is a list of courses completed by Deborah. Introduction to Forensics, Anishinaabemowin Basics, Culinary Arts – Part 1, 2 & 3, Exploring First Nation Cultures: The Anishinaabe, Seven Teachings / Seven Fires, Every Day is Earth Day, Creative Writing: Spoken Word, Woodland Art and Artists, Anishinaabemowin For Absolute Beginners with Barb Nolan, Digital Photography – Part 1, 2 & 3, Picture This, and Indigenous Peoples of Canada.

I enjoy our weekly communications and I believe that Deborah deserves to become Learner of the Month for June!

We decided to ask Deborah some questions so we could share more about her story with you.

How did you first hear about online learning with Good Learning Anywhere?

I was looking for websites that would help me learn about the indigenous people who resided on Manitoulin Island after I moved to the Island.

Did you have any struggles during your learning? If so, how did you overcome them?

The hardest part was when my internet went out and I was part way through a test. Thankfully there is a way to reset the tests, and I was able to continue on to finish the course I was working on at the time.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting to improve their skills?

There are a lot of really good courses being offered here, and lots of help if you find you are having issues with something. Take a look through the course catalogue, take one course at a time and work at your speed and you will improve your skills. Don’t worry about what others are doing, you will learn at your own speed.

What is your greatest achievement? Or what accomplishment are you most proud of?

I finished the digital photography course, and have been able to put the things I learned into practice with my camera to capture some amazing bird photographs.

What are your goals for the future?

Just to keep learning every day, you’re never too old to learn!!

Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you on this journey?

All the mentors have been great, so thank you all for the help!

Is there anything else you would like to share with people about winning this award?

I was surprised to get a reward, being able to continue to learn new things to me was already reward enough.

Congratulations Deborah! All the best in 2022!
