Workplace Wellness

NEW SPRING 2024 Mental Wellness is essential for leading a happy life, whether at home or in the workplace. This course is designed to provide insights into Workplace Wellness. We’ll explore the signs and symptoms of stress and ways to reduce stress levels in our daily lives. You’ll also learn self-care techniques that you can incorporate into your daily routine, In the second part of this course, we’ll discuss Worker’s Rights in Ontario and use the teachings of the Medicine Wheel to help achieve balance in our lives. Safety First: Let's Learn About WHMIS!

*NEW Spring 2024* Do you want to learn how to stay safe around chemicals and other hazardous materials? WHMIS training is not only a great addition to your resume – it helps keep you safe! Hazardous products can be found in nearly all homes and workplaces. Therefore, even though the overall goal of WHMIS is to educate and protect workers from chemical hazards in the workplace, it can help protect you and your family at home too. This Moodle course goes over what WHMIS is, why it matters to you, what the symbols mean, and how to stay safe from hazardous materials. Upon completion of this course, learners may be eligible to have their WHMIS Certification course and exam covered by GLA (limited spots available).

Introduction to Budgeting, Credit and Online Safety

NEW WINTER 2024 – In this two-part course, we will learn how to create a personal budget (income, expenses, savings) and talk about ways to take control of your money and make the budget work for you. We will also learn about credit and how to work towards building a good credit rating. Also, we will learn about staying safe online including identity theft.

Seven Teachings / Seven Fires
Teachings in Indigenous cultures have been handed down generation after generation. They are often ways of teaching us lessons. In this course, we will look at The Seven Teachings and The Seven Fires. These teachings can guide us in how we respond to the world around us and to one another. Join us as we explore these two very important teachings of the Anishinabek. This is a 2-session course.

This is an introduction to the history and culture of Canada’s Métis Citizens. Powwow Protocols, Etiquette and More
Have you ever wondered what a Pow Wow is? Or if Non-Indigenous persons can attend? Maybe you want to know what to do once you are there. This course will provide you with the history of the Pow Wow, the types of Pow Wows, the dancers, and the rules of the “arena” as well as important Pow Wow etiquette. Exploring Indigenous Innovation & Technology
From tools to housing, travel, and clothing, Indigenous technology has given us so much. In this course, learners will define innovation and technology in an Indigenous context. This course will help them identify and explore a variety of different indigenous innovations throughout history and learn how those items have impacted modern technology as we know it. Exploring Wampum Belts
Wampum Belts have played an important part in Indigenous and Canadian history. Join us in this 2 session course as we look at the design, use, and importance of the Wampum belts in the Haudenosaunee tradition. Note: This is a LIVE 2-session course.

Woodland Art and Artists

Do you know the work of a Woodland Artist? Norval Morrisseau, through his unique approach to painting, brought recognition to Indigenous art and culture. We will introduce you to the work of this great Canadian artist, as well as the work of 4 others. Like Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Jackson Beardy, Carl Ray, and Eddie Cobiness turned to their Indigenous roots and traditional knowledge to paint bold, eye-catching images that tell the story of the Ojibwa in a unique way.

Tech4You: PowerPoint and Google Presentations

Presentation programs like Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides are used to create presentations to persuade, inform, and teach an audience. At home, work, or school, you may create a presentation to share pictures, report progress, teach new skills, or provide information. In this course, we will discuss what a presentation is, the different word processing programs available, and some of the most common presentation tools. Note: This is a LIVE 2-session course.

Spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets are used to organize data and information. Household budgets, team lists, time sheets, and schedules are just some examples of spreadsheets you may make at home, at school, and at work. In this course, we will discuss what a spreadsheet is, the different spreadsheet programs available, and some of the most common spreadsheet tools. Note: This is a LIVE 2-session course.

Introduction to Food Safety Certification

This course is designed by Ontario Native Literacy Coalition (ONLC), as a preparation and study companion for learners interested in obtaining their Food Handlers certification in Ontario. Food Handling is part of many jobs and having the certification can be a great addition to your resumé. This Moodle course goes over who needs the Food Handler certification, how to properly cook and handle food, what foodborne illness is, and an introduction to some Indigenous cooks, restaurants, and more!

Note: This is a preparatory course that will help you prepare for the Food Handlers certification course and exam. You will NOT receive a Food Handlers Certification from this course. Upon completion of this course, learners may be eligible to have their Food Handler Certification course and exam covered by GLA.

Is Smart Serve Right For You?

*Re-opening: Available March 1st, 2024* Are you thinking about a job or career in the Food and Beverage Industry, but don’t know if you need Smart Serve? This course is designed, by Ontario Native Literacy Coalition (ONLC), as a preparation and study companion for learners interested in obtaining the Smart Serve certification in Ontario. This course offers a look at what Smart Serve is, who needs it, and what steps to follow in order to keep employees and the public safe and informed. It also introduces learners to some different avenues, Indigenous performers on the rise, and popular Indigenous restaurants. Upon completion of this course, learners may be eligible to have their Smart Serve Certification course and exam covered by GLA (limited spots available).

The Third Side: Conflict and Resolution

There are two sides to every argument but together we can find the third side and resolve conflicts. This course will teach you to see things from other people’s viewpoints. Conflicts happen at home, in your community, at work and school. Medical Terminology and Body Systems
