Do you need to create a resumé? Does your resumé need an update? Join us for these 4 LIVE online sessions where your instructor will help you explore resumé templates, identify basic resumé sections and get you started on creating your own resumé using Google Docs. Participants should have a Gmail Account. Note: this is a 4 session course.

First Aid Essentials

If someone you were with was choking or had a head injury – would you know what to do? This 4 session LIVE course is taught by GLA instructor Holly, a former paramedic in Northern Ontario. Her many years of experience with emergency care and education give her a common sense approach. This course will introduce you to Basic First Aid concepts and How to become First Aid/CPR Certified. At the end of this course, we will know how to Recognize an Emergency, Look for Ways to Prevent Accidents and put Safety First. This is NOT a First Aid Certification course. Clients will get a Certificate of Participation for this online course. Note: this is a 4 session course.

Food For Thought

Food plays a vital role in our lives and in our cultures. Even though it is a part of our daily life, it is a very complex topic. Costs, availability, traditions, and nutrition are just some of the factors that complicate our relationship with food. In this course, you’ll be introduced to food security, what it means, and how to combat it. You’ll also learn about pantry basics, supermarket setups, budget-friendly recipes, and more!

Mindfulness Matters

Mindfulness is for everyone. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what your physical ability is, if you’re religious or not, it can benefit you! In this introductory course, we learn what mindfulness is, why it is important, and start practising some simple and easy techniques that will help you cope with stress and create some calm space in your mind.

Pot Politics

In October, Canada will legalize marijuana use. The regulation of cannabis will touch many aspects of our society – Do you know your rights? This Moodle course will explore the effects of Marijuana use so we can make informed decisions. It will also look at what Bill C-45 means for marijuana possession, home growing, and sales for adults with useful and relevant information.

Rent-Wise

In this course, we will take a look at things you need to know and consider when renting a place to live. Learn about rental options, vacancy rates, subsidized and co-operative housing, tenancy agreements, tenant rights and responsibilities, and maintenance and safety. Equip yourself with this introduction to the knowledge you need to rent wisely and protect your rights.

Culinary Arts

This course covers the basics of nutrition; and health, safety, and sanitation. In addition, the course explains the basic science principles used in cooking and various cooking methods. Finally, the course describes the culinary skills required to make a variety of items, ranging from stocks and soups to seafood and poultry to various bread and desserts.

By the end of this course, learners will:

  • Explore the history and influential figures in the culinary arts

  • Identify international cuisines

  • Identify nutrient sources and functions

  • Categorize foodservice industry segments

Introduction to Robotics

This course explains various concepts related to robotics. It begins by describing the evolution and applications of robotics. This course will help the learner to identify career opportunities and important employability skills in robotics. The course explains the importance of teamwork and describes the skills needed to work in a team. The course also describes the science of Newton’s laws of motion, basic concepts of electricity, electronic circuits, Boolean algebra, magnetics, and their applicability to robotics.

By the end of this course, learners will:

  • Describe the use of sensors, motors and gears in robotics.

Hazardous products can be found in nearly all homes and workplaces. The goal of WHMIS training is to protect workers from chemical hazards in the workplace. Sharing Circle

Join our Sharing Circle

Aambe! Maajaa daa! Get involved with online learning by attending our Online Sharing Circles. Circles are held in our live online classroom the 3rd Monday of each month (unless otherwise noted). Participants will be able to learn from and interact with a variety of First Nation guest speakers. Past speakers have included Darrell Dennis, Lisa Charleyboy and Shirley Cheechoo.

Introduction to Online Learning

This LIVE 2-hour class introduces the online platforms that are used in GLA. The course is taught in the live online classroom where we will use the whiteboard and its on-screen tools to communicate with other learners across Ontario. During the 2 hours, we will also explore our independent learning platform Plato and our Short Courses in Moodle. These 2 platforms let you learn at your own pace while supported by your mentor. Both have many courses to choose from. Come to explore the learning options with GLA and find the styles that will work for you! Note: This course is offered more than once. Blogging is an online event that started out as online diaries, but it has developed into an online community for anyone to share information and their expertise! In this course you will learn how to start your own blog!

Creating Documents

Posters, lists, sign-up sheets, resumes and newsletters, are all examples of documents that can be created using a word processing program. In this course, we will learn the basics of how to use these programs and how to create great looking documents for school, work or home. Essential Skills for Using Mobile Devices

Are you new to the world of mobile devices? This 3 part course provides an overview of common features on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Whether you are a first-time mobile device user or are thinking of buying your first device and don’t know where to start, this course may be helpful to you! Topics covered are basic features and benefits, choosing the right device, troubleshooting and settings, privacy and security, gadgets and add-ons, apps, responsible use and saving money. Creative Writing and Slam Poetry

Come join us as we experiment with writing and build our confidence by putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!). Together, through the use of creative writing activities based on subjects you know, care, and feel about, we will get ideas flowing. With all Career Introduction Courses participants should be comfortable working with level 2 & 3 OALCF tasks. These courses take approximately 90 days to complete. There are small references to American information. We encourage participants to research comparable Canadian information. We do not offer credits for these courses. Please note that some of these courses include 2 parts so please talk to your mentor.
