Anishinaabemowin for Absolute Beginners (LIVE)

*New Spring/Summer 2021* This course is intended for beginners in the Anishinaabe language. It allows them to practice their oral skills at a level with which they are comfortable and to gain knowledge of how the language works and more confidence in using basic beginner language in a variety of basic day-to-day situations.

Finding the Missing Puzzle Pieces - The Basics of Algebra

*New Winter 2021* Do you cringe when you see letters within math equations? Do you often wonder why letters would be needed within math or why Algebra is important in the first place? Don’t worry, Algebra can be as fun as solving puzzles! This ‘Introductory to Algebra’ course may be just what you need! As you begin to understand the basics with this course, you may realize that you are already using Algebra within your everyday life or that you may use it regularly within a future career opportunity. Indigenous Peoples of Canada

Indigenous people are part of the founding nations of the country we now call Canada.  They make up close to 5% of Canada’s population. The Third Side: Conflict and Resolution

There are two sides to every argument but together we can find the third side and resolve conflicts. This course will teach you to see things from other people’s viewpoints. Conflicts happen at home, in your community, at work, and at school. Creating a Personal Budget

Do you have a personal budget in place to manage your money? If not, this course is for you! Creating a personal budget can help you track your spending habits, and make decisions on how and where to spend your money. Whether your goal is to buy a new snow machine, save money for school, or set aside money for some fun – creating a budget can help you work towards it. Filling Out Forms

Filling in forms online has become even more necessary in the last year. They are needed for renewing licenses, applying for jobs, library cards, and ordering online! it can be intimidating but together we will start with a basic form and work our way up to more complex ones. We will discuss confidentiality and security issues as well as tips to remember your login information! This is a 2-session course.

Seven Teachings / Seven Fires

Teachings in Indigenous cultures have been handed down generation after generation. They are often ways of teaching us lessons. In this course, we will look at The Seven Teachings and The Seven Fires. These teachings can guide us in how we respond to the world around us and to one another. Join us as we explore these two very important teachings of the Anishinabek. This is a 2-session course.

Four Directions Parenting

The Medicine Wheel calls for balance in all areas of our life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. This view of balance can also be used in parenting. Children don’t come with instruction manuals but parents can educate themselves on how to parent the way they want to. Using the teachings of the Medicine Wheel, this course will help us find our balance and help us find peace and harmony in our parenting skills and abilities.

Woodland Art and Artists

Do you know the work of a Woodland Artist? Norval Morrisseau, through his unique approach to painting, brought recognition to Indigenous art and culture. We will introduce you to the work of this great Canadian artist, as well as the work of 4 others. Like Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Jackson Beardy, Carl Ray, and Eddie Cobiness turned to their Indigenous roots and traditional knowledge to paint bold, eye-catching images that tell the story of the Ojibwa in a unique way. This course is designed for students at a beginning reading level. Real-World Skills #1 takes learners through what a good resumé looks like, searching for a job, getting ready for an interview, filling out a job application, learning what an employer expects, and how to have great customer service skills.

Picture This!

Join us as GLA goes on a scavenger hunt! In the first live session, we will take a look at tips and tricks to get some great pictures with your phone or digital camera! Then, you’ll have a week to go out and take photos of the items on our secret list, and send them to the instructor. We will meet online again to hear about the stories and adventures behind the photos! Participants will need access to a phone with a camera or a digital camera. GLA does not supply these. Preparing for a Zombie Apocalypse

…and real emergencies too!!! So what do you need to do before zombies attack…or ice storms, floods or forest fires actually happen? Natural and man-made disasters are becoming increasingly widespread throughout Ontario. We don’t think they will happen to us, but they do.
