We are excited to announce the final learner of the month of the decade, Roger!
Roger was an occasional visitor to our adult learning centre in Sioux Lookout before 2019, but this year Roger has shown a wide range of creative interests and has become one of the most frequent visitors.
From a level of near digital illiteracy, Roger has used SHLC’s DOI2T program to advance his digital skills to an incredible level. Roger has completed many Cricut projects and has learned to independently use all of the tools and undertake the creative process from start to finish. He has been working more with the 3D printers lately and has demonstrated a brilliant imagination, advanced planning skills, and an outspoken excitement for each project. He has even demonstrated the ability to program the Ozobot robots using the Ozoblockly programming software.
Outside of DOI2T, he participated in the organizing of two fishing trips for fellow Supportive Housing residents. Furthermore, Roger cares deeply for his friends and the community and has used his new skills to make several personalized gifts, such as a custom uniform shirt for the bus driver of our town’s new Hub Transit bus.
As an Elder with disabilities, his wisdom and gentleness are a welcomed gift to our learning centre. He continues to pursue creative goals and continues to use his skills to give back to our community. For example, he is attempting to create a wooden box to put his newly 3D printed chess pieces inside, all for the purpose of donating it to the local Sioux Lookout Warming Shelter. His upcoming 3D printing project will be a screaming eagle in flight. We can’t wait to see what he will create next!
Sioux-Hudson Literacy Council runs the online Good Learning Anywhere program and the onsite Literacy and Basic Skills program at the Sioux Lookout Learning Centre. SHLC is part of Employment Ontario and is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.
