Please join us in congratulating Charlene on being SHLC’s May 2024 Learner of the Month.

Charlene was nominated by Nida, an online educator here at Good Learning Anywhere. Here is a statement about Charlene from Nida.

While doing her coursework at GLA Charlene’s commitment to self-directed study has been unwavering. With an impressive average of approximately 20 hours per week (and a remarkable peak of 48 hours in one week), she has dedicated herself to continuous learning since joining our program eight months ago.

Charlene’s overarching goals reflect her determination:

  • To improve the quality of her life.
  • To be a supportive and caring mother.
  • To improve her basic knowledge and upgrade her skills.
  • To become a Social Support Worker:

While at GLA Charlene continues to show her determination to achieve her goals:

  • Completed Essential Writing Skills: Charlene successfully completed this foundational course, honing her ability to express thoughts clearly and professionally.
  • Completed Essential Math Skills: While taking this course, Chalene discovered she had an aptitude for Math.
  • Completing Essential Reading Skills

Consistently aiming for excellence, Charlene frequently achieved an impressive average of 90% or above in all of her Essential Skills courses.

In addition to the Essential Skills courses, Charlene is now enrolled in self wellness courses, including Mental Wellness, Mindfulness and Getting a Jump Start on healthy Living.
As Charlene aims to take control over her life’s direction, it should also be mentioned her community involvement:

  • Wellness Group: Charlene volunteers at a local social support program, which follows the eight Elements of Wellness program
  • Two Book Groups: Her participation in book clubs enhances social skills
  • Counseling Support: Charlene seeks guidance through Alternatives for Women (AFW).

Charlene’s resilience in the face of adversities— financial, personal, family, and the lack of opportunities in the past is truly inspiring as she continues to focus on personal growth and transformation.

We decided to ask Charlene some questions so we could share more about their story with you.

How did you first hear about online learning with Good Learning Anywhere?

I first heard about Good Learning Anywhere from Prince Edward Learning Centre.

Did you have any struggles during your learning? If so, how did you overcome them?

I’ve had obstacles due to family issues and health. I’d take a few days break and return to my studies.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting to improve their skills?

My motto is where there’s a will, there’s a way. You need to work at your studies as much as possible to succeed. If someone gets stressed, walk away for a few hours and you come back with a fresh mind. If you still can’t figure out what you’re working on, reach out to your mentor for help.

What is your greatest achievement? Or what accomplishment are you most proud of?

My greatest achievement would have been Essential Math and Essential Reading part of English. I suffer with a brain injury and couldn’t believe how good I was in math, that was my worst subject in school. Reading has always been difficult, especially dealing with reading comprehension.

What are your goals for the future?

My future goals are to be a Social Support Worker and open an organization that helps Victims of Violence. I also want to help seniors remain at home as long I can with ongoing supports.

Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you on this journey?

I’d love to thank Nida for all our conversations of support and being there for me when I needed help. She has been very supportive and I appreciate that so much.

Is there anything else you would like to share with people about winning this award?

I was actually shocked and happy to receive the email of this award. When you start a course, you need to stick to it. It was such a great feeling to be nominated and accepted for this award. It shows me that I’ve been acknowledged for my hard work and accomplishments.

Congratulations Charlene! All the best in 2024!
