Congratulations to Carl Powell for being GLA’s Learner of the Month for November. The following article has been submitted by Jami who is Carl’s online mentor.

Carl is a resident at the John Howard Society, and he has recently come out of corrections. Carl has been attending the Soup-R Tech Tuesday program, which is an opportunity for people to use Rumie tablets and share a homemade pot of soup. He has not missed a single Tuesday. We have developed a great rapport and gaining his trust has been something I have been working on since meeting him back in September.  Carl was ambitious upon registration and opted for Pot Politics, Food Safety, and Introduction to Online Learning. He has successfully completed Pot Politics and Introduction to Online Learning, and only has a few tasks left in Food Safety. Currently, Carl is completing the Safe Food Handler course with the hopes of writing and passing his exam.

Carl is a funny guy!  He doesn’t help in the kitchen but he does come in to check on us from time to time and find out when “his pot of soup” will be ready. Carl is also a straight shooter and calls “a spade, a spade”. I never have to guess what he is thinking.

What makes me most proud of Carl, is not his academic achievements, but more, his drive and endeavour to become a better father and partner.  He is constantly showing me pictures of his beautiful baby girl and his girlfriend. His goal is to transition out of the JHS, and hopefully, build a life with his little family. If I could tell Carl one thing, it’s that no matter what has happened in the past, he is capable of really great things in the future, and I am here to support him along the way.

How did you first hear about online learning with Good Learning Anywhere?

From the John Howard Society.

Did you have any struggles during your learning? If so, how did you overcome them?

Yes. I had a hard time with all the reading in my food safety course.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting to improve their skills?

Keep at it.

What is your greatest achievement? Or what accomplishment are you most proud of?

Just doing my courses.

What are your goals for the future?

I would like full-time employment.

Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you on this journey?

Ya.  Jami my Mentor.

Is there anything else you would like to share with people about winning this award?

Nope.

Congratulations Carl. On behalf of GLA, we wish you continued success and joy in your life.
