Please join us in congratulating Ashley Lynch on being SHLC’s December 2022 Learner of the Month.

Ashley was nominated by her mentor, Michelle. Here is an excerpt of what Michelle submitted to us about Ashley.

Ashley registered September 28. She had a rough start to our program. She is taking part of the Contact North laptop loaner program. While waiting for the laptop from CN, I referred her to her local YMC Employment services to access her course from their computers so she could get started. She struggled with working from there because of all the noise and distractions. She managed to temporarily borrow a laptop from them.

Because the Housing Wi-fi where she lives is unreliable, she started getting up early to get on; “I’m waking up at 5 am Monday to Friday in attempt to take a running start at this.” Then her glasses broke. She cannot see properly without them. She had a hard time getting into see doctor. It took 2 weeks to get her appointment. Once she had her appointment, her Ophthalmologist recommended she not do any screen time without them. She then had to wait for her new glasses to come in.

I reached out to Robyn for an exception to her having to access every week. I felt strongly that Ashley needed our support. Ashley communicates all the time and I have gotten to know her in a very short time. She shared that she was 2 years sober and working for the first time ever. Succeeding in our course is part of her recovery. She needs to be successful. Ashley did not disappoint me.

As soon as she received her glasses (she had her CN laptop and modem by then) she started to work on her course. She completed Banking and Everyday Math Part 1 and has almost finished Part 2 within 2 weeks. She is flying through her courses! She has already picked out 7 new courses that she wants to take. She is super excited!

Because Ashley’s persevered even when roadblock after roadblock prevented her from starting her course, I believe she deserves learner of the month.

We decided to ask Ashley some questions so we could share more about her story with you.
