Congratulations goes out to Kenton Fifield for being selected as Good Learning Anywhere’s March Learner of the Month! It might be April Fools’ Day but we assure you, Kenton is NO joke!

Kenton is a graduate of our ESMO Program. Essential Skills for Mining Online (or ESMO) is an 8 week course that uses a combination of independent learning and LIVE classes to improve Essential Skills in math, document use and reading in preparation to write the Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES). This course was offered in partnership with Oshki-Pimache-O-Win.

When Kenton found  out that he won this award, he was very honoured. We asked Kenton to share his journey with us by answering a few questions. These are his responses:

What advice do you have for someone thinking about upgrading their skills?

A person might have very good knowledge of their current job, but they will be limited to advancing to a higher position without constantly upgrading skills.  Also, no job is secure anymore with changing markets.  By upgrading skills, a person is in a much better position to get work in a variety of fields if need be.

How did you start? Did you face struggles?

I started the Mining Course as a necessity to have any kind of a chance at getting a job at the New Gold Mine in Barwick.  I struggled a lot, as I discovered I had a very poor memory of topics I had studied years ago in school. I had to put a lot more hours into studying than I could have imagined.

What is your greatest achievement?

The online classes were very thorough in covering material, and taught very professionally in a modern setting.

The Plato lessons were laid out in a good progressive order.

I am not nearly as sharp now as when I was young in school. My greatest achievement in this course was that given this excellent learning environment, I was still able to learn at my age.

What are your goals for the future?

For the immediate future my goal is to get full time work at pretty well anything.

It would be wonderful to get something to cover day to day living expenses.

When the New Gold mine starts in Barwick, I hope to get a better paying job.

With New Gold, not only to get a job to pay for living expenses, but for some household repairs, replacing old appliances and furniture and a used car.

Hopefully I will have the skills to be a worthwhile employee and be able to help New Gold make some money.

Kenton recognizes the necessity of continuous improvement in order to compete in today’s job market. He also recognizes that he had to put in a lot of hard work to successfully complete this program. So, it is our honour at Good Learning Anywhere to recognize Kenton with the Learner of the Month award for his amazing achievements. We wish him the best of luck on the TOWES  and continued success in all of his future endeavours. Please join us in congratulating Kenton.
