December Learner of Month: Michele Etmanskie

Categories: Blog,Learners & Awards,News

Congratulations to Michele Etmanskie for being chosen as Good Learning Anywhere’s Learner of the Month for December.  Michele has been with GLA since June 2017.  In the beginning, it was a struggle for her due to technical issues and she was not able to log into her PLATO account.  Persevering, and with the assistance of Contact North, Michele was finally able to log in and on her way to completing her Introduction to Accounting course. However, she found the course was not living up to her expectations but Michele did not want to give up on the course. In Michele’s words  “I am not a quitter.  After some more time though, she made the decision that this course was not right for her. Michele did not quit but asked her mentor if she could switch to another course.  She did and diligently completed the Office Administration course with no issues. Michele then registered for the Plato course Principles of Information Technology and completed Part A in 36 hrs, Part B in 53 hrs.  Feeling confident, she then registered for Career Explorations and completed that course in 22 hours.  The flexibility of being able to learn online from home and going to her community learning centre when needed has made things so much easier for Michele.  Michele suffers from vision obstacles and appreciates the encouragement from her mentor. She says she is so grateful to GLA for giving her the opportunity to feel like she can accomplish her goals.

How did you first hear about online learning with Good Learning Anywhere?

I first heard about online learning when I was advised to go to the local training and learning centre to upgrade my skills.

Did you have any struggles with your learning? If so, how did you overcome them?

Struggles, of course I did and still do. I struggle daily with depression and anxiety. My online instructors have been so great it makes it impossible not to feel good about yourself.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting to improve their skills?

Go for it. You have absolutely nothing to lose. It has been an awesome experience for me. I now feel I can get that office job I have wanted for the last 20 years.

What is your greatest achievement? Or what accomplishment are you most proud of?

Well, this certificate sure makes me proud. Sometimes you need a pat on the back just to remind yourself that you can do what you set your mind to.

What are your goals for the future?

My goal is to get an office job and finally be given the chance to show what I am capable of.

Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you on this journey?

My Back to Work Specialist Lisa, she sure is wonderful

Is there anything else you would like to share with people about winning this award?

I was surprised beyond belief, in a good way of course. Thank you'
