There are many ways to get credits towards your Grade 12 OSSD. There are many organizations that offer credit courses and credits for prior learning. If you are a mature student, you may be able to receive Maturity or Prior learning credits depending on when you first entered secondary school.


Who is Eligible?

You may be eligible for Maturity Credits if you:

  • Started high school in Ontario before September 1, 1999, or
  • Enrolled in an Ontario secondary school as an adult (18+) before February 1, 2004

You may be eligible for PLAR credits if you:

  • Started high school in Ontario after September 1, 1999, or
  • First enrolled in an Ontario secondary school after February 1, 2004

What is the PLAR Assessment?

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is the formal evaluation and credit granting process where you may be granted credits for prior learning. Prior learning includes knowledge and skills you have from outside of school such as workshops, employment and volunteer experience.


What is PLAR Junior?

The PLAR junior is 4 lessons that you can complete and can be granted up to 16 credits based on the lessons, exams, and life experiences.


Who is eligible for PLAR?

You must be at least 18 years of age or over to be considered a Mature Student. Many of the organizations listed also offer credit distance courses for people under 18. Please contact them for more information.

Here is a list of some of the organizations available in Northern Ontario that provide credit courses, but please contact your education counsellor or local school board for more information.
