Congratulations to Lanell Mejaki, winner of the Lois Gray Award for Achievement. Lanell was nominated by Clara Corbiere, her online mentor with Good Learning Anywhere.

The Lois Gray Award for Achievement is awarded to the learner who has reached or is on their way to reaching their goal, whether it is employment, further training or education.  We also consider learners who have overcome obstacles and challenges in their lives to become successful adult learners. This award sponsored by Fresh Market Foods in Sioux Lookout for the second year in a row now. We want to thank Todd & Tracey for their continued support of this award and their commitment to life long learning and adult education.

Lanell began her journey with Good Learning Anywhere in the fall of 2013. Lanell has been very dedicated to her studies and has become such a role model for others. She has overcome many obstacles like we all do from time to time. Lanell has been very focused on her goals and is doing everything she possibly can to get there. We’re going to hear a lot more about Lanell in the future as she continues to be an ambassador for other life long learners.

We asked Lanell to answer a few questions about her learning journey.  Here is what she had to say:

How did you get started working with GLA?

This is my second time around with GLA. the last time I just took whatever I could to learn something new. This time around I have a specific goal in mind: To gain as much knowledge as possible to guide me into being a successful business owner. Then I just looked at the course catalog and picked everything I could think of that would benefit me as a learner and push me that much closer to my goal.

What motivates you to move forward with your goals?

I motivate myself to keep pushing forward. I just really want to succeed. I believe that drive for success is what motivates me to keep working or to try harder. I’ve endured a lot of failure in my life, and that’s not a feeling I want to go back to.

What did you find most challenging with online learning?

The most challenging part about online learning was connectivity. According to my ISP my location sits just on the outside edge of the “network reach.” Unfortunately, this means my connection is often dropped or incredibly slow. However, even if I had trouble staying connected there was always a recording I could go back and listen to either through streaming or downloading.

Tell us about the most rewarding times working with Good Learning Anywhere.

The most rewarding times I’ve worked with GLA was when I participated in the “Preparing for a zombie apocalypse and other real world emergencies” class. That one had a lot of hands-on activities to try at home and I learned a lot! Not exactly business related, but hey, who doesn’t want to learn about protecting oneself from the elements and zombies!

What is your advice for someone thinking about online learning?

Advice: Just do it. You’ll never know until you try, and don’t be afraid of learning. Learning is a wonderful thing!

Where do you see yourself in the next three years? What might you be doing then?

Well, by September 2017 I hope to launch a business that I’ve been working so hard on for the past several months! And in three years I will still be operating my business successfully, and hopefully will have expanded by then. I don’t want to divulge too much about it – Entrepreneur’s secret! Overall, I want to be in a place where I can finally give back to my community the way the services around town have helped me out whenever I needed it.

Congratulations Lanell. We wish you all the best with your future goals.
